SORENSTAM SETS SIGHTS ON 54
World number one Annika Sorenstam began her 2002 season with the attitude that there is plenty of room for improvement in her game.

The 31-year-old Arizona based Swede was asked in her press conference preceding the ANZ Ladies Masters whether it was possible to improve on last season.

"I think so," replied Sorenstam who won eight times, became the first woman to pass $2 million in earnings for a season, had 20 top-20 finishes and became the first woman to break 60 when she carded her 59 at the Standard Register PING last year.

"I'm shooting for a better year, I want to be a better player and that's what I am focussing on. I believe you can hit 18 fairways, 18 greens and make every putt, so there is room for improvement there already," she grinned.

If she did happen to one putt each green, assuming of course she played the par fives as three shot holes, she would end up breaking her record by a massive five shots and achieve the dream of former Solheim Cup captain Pia Nilsson who is one of the biggest advocates of the realistic possibility of shooting 54.

Sorenstam set out to regain her World number one title last year and stepped up her work ethic with a gruelling bout of fitness training and spent many hours in the gym, often punishing her abdominal muscles through 1000 sit ups a day.

This year, her four weekly trips to the gym have increased to "five or six times" with her new German born trainer. Her golf practice also increased, leaving little time in the day for much else.

"Last year, I wanted to be the best player in the World," added the four time Solheim Cup player, admitting that Webb's success the previous year had motivated her.

"I wanted to be number one in the world again and that's what pushed me the most because I wasn't satisfied...Karrie's success motivated me.

"Seeing how good a player she is made me want to work harder so I could beat
her and that made me want to practice. I love what I do, so it wasn't really too much of a sacrifice, but it does take a lot of work, time, dedication and there needs to be a will too."

After last year's incredible year, it would be fickle to suggest that a 54 is not possible - if Sorenstam believes in it enough, it may well happen.
