Iben Tinning wins the
Golden Golf Ball
By Espen Uldal
(Copenhagen, December 18,
2003) Denmark's Iben Tinning
might have been without a
victory in 2003, but with
eight top ten finishes and a
starring role at The Solheim
Cup in Sweden, along with
gaining her LPGA Tour card
by winning the qualifying
school at the first attempt,
it's hardly surprising that
she was voted winner of "Den
Gyldne Golfbold", or the
'Golden Golf Ball' for
becoming the Danish Golfer
of the Year for 2003.
Tinning, one of the most
powerful hitters in women's
golf, beat some tough
opposition to the title as
Danish golfers are now
beginning to make a serious
mark on world golf. She
fended off Men's European
Tour winner's Soren Kjeldsen
and Anders Hansen to the
title and of course Thomas
Bjorn, who dramatically lost
out at The Open Championship
at Sandwich, had to play
second fiddle once again in
2003.
Tinning, who will play on
both sides of the Atlantic
in 2004, finished in fourth
place on the LET Order of
Merit for the second
successive season and she
was delighted on receiving
the prestigious award.
"This award means a lot to
me, because it breaks new
ground for women golfers in
Denmark as well as for
myself,' said Tinning who is
the third in her family to
receive the honor after her
cousins Ben and Steen
Tinning.
"I wasn't sure I would get
it, but I was hoping so. It
is also flattering to get
this award, because now it
takes more than just winning
a tournament to get this
recognition in Denmark."
