Europa slo USA i Ryder
Cup - vanskelig å svelge
for amerikanerne
Amerikanerne var temmelig
overrasket over at Tiger
Woods, Phil Mickelson
& co ikke klarte å
slå europeerne i Ryder
Cup. Kritikken om at det
europeiske laget var ute
av form og at Ryder Cup
ikke ble hva det burde
vært siden lagene ble
tatt ut et år i forveien,
har stilnet.
Fra den andre siden av
Atlanterhavet har vi
sakset følgende
amerikanske betraktning
rundt det som skjedde på
The Belfry:
"
Reliving last weekend's
Ryder Cup may be painful
for fans of the American
side, but the truth of the
matter is that it was a
well-played competition
and the Yanks just got
"Brooklined"
during Sunday's singles
matches. You will recall
in 1999 it was the
Americans who staged a
fierce rally on Sunday to
claim the Cup.
Some
will debate whether
Captain Curtis Strange
went with the right
strategy by back-loading
his Sunday lineup. Tiger
Woods never got to be a
factor, they will say. But
that's golf. Sometimes the
ball rolls your way and
sometimes it doesn't. The
European squad seized the
early momentum and
reclaimed the Cup. A few
highlights:
- Colin Montgomerie
earned kudos for his
impressive play
throughout the
weekend. But longtime
Cup participant
Bernhard Langer also
showed his mettle
throughout the
competition.
- Lee Westwood picked
a good time to
rediscover his
competitive fire.
- David Toms was a
significant
contributor on the
American side.
- Paul Azinger is
truly an inspiration.
Remember not so many
years ago when he had
no hair while waging a
battle against cancer?
To be certain emotions did
ride high throughout the
competition, but this
year's event certainly did
seem to have a more civil
tone. Here's to a bright
future for this exciting
event, scheduled next in
2004 for Oakland Hills in
Michigan."
