08.03 LPGA Tour:
Thailand beste spiller ble
verdensmester
Avgjørelsen falt å play off.
Det måtte omspill til for å
kåre årets verdensmester i
Abu Dhabi.
Thailands beste spiller, som
nylig vant på Europa Tour'en,
klarte å slå en av de andre
vinnerne på årets Europa
Tour; sydafrikaneren Charl
Schwartzel på det andre
omspillshullet.
Her er rapporten fra VM i
sandgolf i Abu Dhabi som ble
spilt på mandag. I fjor ble
Henrik Bjørnstad nr. 2 etter
Gren Owen.
JAIDEE TAKES WORLD SAND
GOLF TITLE IN DRAMATIC
PLAY-OFF IN THE ABU DHABI
DESERT
Thailand’s number one golfer
Thongchai Jaidee edges out
South African Charl
Schwartzel in the sands of
Abu Dhabi
In-form Thongchai Jaidee has
been crowned the 2005 Abu
Dhabi World Sand Golf
Champion winning a dramatic
play-off against South
African starlet Charl
Schwartzel. Jaidee also saw
off the challenge of the
likes of Colin Montgomerie,
Miguel Angel Jimenez and
Paul McGinley in the unique
event that saw 23 European
tour players take a break
from the norm and compete on
a golf course made entirely
from sand!
Jaidee’s six under par 65,
including a run of four
birdies in a row on the
front nine, looked to be
good enough for victory
until Schwartzel held a
birdie putt on the 18th
brown to earn a play-off.
Jaidee then returned the
favour in the play-off
holing a putt from similar
length on the second
play-off hole (18th) to win
the championship at Al
Ghazal Golf Club, Abu Dhabi.
The field included a star–studded
line up that included 21
European Tour winners from
no less than 18 different
countries and Jaidee took
advantage of his sand golf
experience from the 2004
event to post a good score
“It is easier second time
around as I got the pace of
the browns straight away. I
putted really well today,
much better than in Dubai
last week and I wish I could
play on browns all the time!
I like the heat here too as
I am used to it” Jaidee was
presented with a cheque
worth $10,000 by His
Excellency Sheikh Dr Ahmed
Bin Saif Al Nayhan, Chairman
of the Department of Civil
Aviation and commented at
the prize ceremony, “this is
a fantastic event and it
feels very good to be a
world champion”
This is the second year that
the Abu Dhabi World Sand
Golf Championship and it is
rapidly establishing a
reputation as a relaxed fun
event for the tour
professionals, sandwiched
between the Dubai Desert
Classic and the Qatar
Masters. The main difference
for the players on the par
71, 6700 yard course at Al
Ghazal are the ‘browns’ (instead
of greens) and the reward of
a small astroturf mat to
play from when you hit the
fairways sculpted from sand.
Ryder Cup hero Colin
Montgomerie, who shot a
level par 71, enjoyed the
sand golf experience, “That
was certainly a very
different experience out
there today, once you get
used to the hitting off the
astroturf mat and the pace
of the browns it’s great fun.
It makes a refreshing change
from the real thing”
